P3D Legends of the Past - Mattie Sanford 1878-1968

Stereogram 16.4 (July/August 1968) - this WAS the Bulletin of the
Stereo Division of the Photographic Society of America - carries a
dedication to Mattie Clark Sanford. I found the articles fascinating.
Here are a few abstracts:

- Stereogram Editor Marjorie Hon, writes:

Mattie Clark Sanford, FPSA, the sweetheart to her legion of friends,
died of a stroke on June 10 (1968) in her native Salt Lake City. She
would have celebrated her 90th birthday this October...

She earned a Fellowship by PSA in 1964 for her "excellence in color and
stereo photography and for her many contributions to the advancement of
amateur photography by teaching, lecturing, and organizational work for
more than 25 years." She was named "Top Woman in the World of
Stereography" by the PSA in 1960.

Her favorite bit of philosophy was "It's what you learn after you know
it all that counts." (I LOVE THAT!!!)

- Myrtle R. Walgreen, FPSA, Chicago Illinois, writes:

(The news reports) didn't mention that she stood atop of Grand Teton at
the age of 80 - the oldest woman, as far as we know, ever to make that
steneous climb. They didn't describe the way, in her 80's, she
prowled around Utah's deserts and mountains in an incessant search for
the perfect picture... And, especially, they didn't describe how her
eyes flashed with love for life and for her Western homeland, and with
pity for us ordinary mortals, who, at half her age, couldn't quite match
her energy.

Mattie Sanford was one of these wonderful one-of-a-kind people who make
every life she touches more exciting and challenging. Few of us will
leave a more beautiful and lasting legacy than her file of photographs.

One more (the best!) to follow...

Incidentally, they have the picture "Gleaning" that RM mentions.
Looks like a typical farm scene with a lady leaning towards the
camera and a young girl and a young man helping. The caption reads:

"The above picture photographed by Mattie Stanford was her favorite.
The lady stooping over is actually Mattie, herself. The camera was
set on a tripod, and a long release cable, camouflaged by the grass,
was ran to her foot. When she was ready she snapped the picture by
stepping on the release.
