I appologise to Gary and George, for mis representing my feelings
about Competitions.
Gary, I didn't mean to imply that Postard photography was boring.
Where I was coming from was that I see alot of images that look like
the same shot of the same rock in the dessert that all of the members
seem to have gone to. Also, IM MY OPINION (and I do feel that other
people are right to have there own) I look for originality and humor
or some sort of emotional response in a photo, not just good
composition and lighting. This is just what I look for as well as a
number of other members I have talked to.
George, Yes I do get, and can take, criticism. I just rarely get
criticism from anyone that knows much about photography. In the
Competitions, I have entered (probably about 30-40, for a total of
hundreds of images), I don't think I got more than 2 actuall
critiques. I usually just got a score ranging from medium to great.
And out of the 2 critiques, one was that I should have cropped the
image in on all sides a tiny bit, and the other time that there was to
much seperation for projection in a hyper shot. Well, at least as far
as the "to much seperation", the judge that made the comment looked at
it in a viewer and aggreed it was ok seperation in the viewer (which
is all I care about anyway).
I did learn, and become a better photographer from going to the club,
but I learned more from the private discusions, and Susan Pinskey's
lecture on "Stereo IMPACT", then in any judging.
One of the most poplular slide that I have shot is one that is out of
focus because I didn't have time to focus, because I would have missed
the shot. I love the image, and so does almost every one that I have
shown it to. It got a crapy score from the judges, I am sure just
because it was out of focus (they didn't even mention it though).
My point is that, If my opinions differ from the prevailing ones then
iether I can try to change the prevailing opinions, or not
participate. It doesn't mean that thier opinions are wrong in my
mind, they just aren't mine.
And from all of the mail I have recieved on this, I bet I am starting
to think that it is not the prevailing opinion of the non judges, or
recent members to the clubs.
