This has happened to me on a couple of occasions, and I think the reason
is this:
When your max bid was not enough to beat the 2nd highest bid by a full
increment, if you increase your maximum the bid price will increase to
the first full increment over the 2nd highest bid.  I ended up paying 50
cents more for a stereoview once because I wanted to protect a less than
one full increment lead, then no one bid again.
