>>abram klooswyk wrote: Bob Maxey is afraid of problems when
'terms get changed or applied incorrectly'. When he says ' "Realist
Format" means a specific thing' I suppose he means the 41x101 outer
dimensions of the mount and maybe all three mount aperture formats? Or
also camera aperture size? Or should 'format' be understood in its
general sense, so including camera design (35 mm lenses, 70 mm lens
separation, 7 feet window). You see, 'specific' is not necessarily
specific to all. And indeed, how to call the family of 41x101 mounts?
>From the 1950s on there were also Belplasca mounts 41x101, aperture
format 23x28. An objection to Donald's proposal could be that 'Rochwite
mount' could *also* be understood as meaning inner as well as outer
dimensions, so not including the 23x28 or other non-5P apertures.<<
I support the need for a term to accurately refer to the 41x101 mount.
When we used the phrase "Realist-format mount (up to 7p)" in a recent
PSA exhibition, I had a 5 star (read *very* experienced) stereographer
contact me to see if they could still enter since they don't shoot with
a Realist camera. It was obvious that this term was not only new to this
person, but confusing because of the "Realist" part of the description.
It was new and confusing to me, too. If we had one term for the 41x101
size mount, then we could put the opening after it, and the brand (if
necessary) after that, i.e. [new name]-7p (RBT) or [new name]-23x28
(Belplasca), etc. The term "Realist" is misleading as it is tied too
much to the actual brand name of the camera that usually has only 5p
images. JMHO.
>>Abram Klooswyk: As a personal note, I considered it an honour to sit
next to Seton at the closing dinner of the I.S.U. congress in
Arlington/Washington, 1985.<<
I also had the honor to meet this great man in Arizona in 1996, shake
his hand and get his autograph on my PSA conference program.
