P3D Re: The Dunkley Effect

Interesting speculation and comment (as far as my digests have come)
from Boris, A Klooswyk, etc. I'll toss a few more logs on this fire.
;-)
I have seen the ChromaDepth Effect and the Dunkley Effect, and they
look quite different to me. I have observed as carefully as I am
able, being both experimenter and subject. Certain red parts in the
"chroma" scheme jump inordinately from the page. Other depth
relationships are non-sensical from a real picture standpoint, due to
colors that don't support the 3D composition well. I don't see these
problems in the Dunkley viewing at all. Also there is fuzzy
diffraction in the chroma viewing, while the Dunkley viewing is
sharper, if anything - I have a hard time crediting the notion that my
eyes' lenses are doing a ChromaDepth trick for these reasons.
Boris' suggestion that the improved sharpness from pinhole viewing may
encourage the brain to draw more depth from the picture *does*
correlate to my observation of Dunkley effects - and is a big part of
my speculation as to cause. Also pictures with strong light and
shadow reinforcing the forms, especially faces, seem to really trigger
the effect well. Also, I'm more prepared to credit the *brain* than
the *eye* with creating this sense of depth.
I too am leery of comparisons between stereoscopic depth and Dunkley
depth. It is different. But I think non-stereoscopic cues may be
under-rated in their potential strength. The Dunkley Effect may be a
tip-off to the brain's strong "desire" to see space.
How are we to explain my "squinting & slightly converging" success in
getting the Effect? No pinholes or pinkies. Any guesses what my eyes
are doing? Is there 1-eyed Dunkley viewing?
I've never met Ken personally, so I can't speak to Abram's suggestions
of "snake oil" salesmanship. But I know I'm not prepared to dismiss
what I am seeing in quite so facile a fashion. ;-) Abram - have you
seen the Dunkley effect under the viewing conditions he recommends?
And what is the visual mechanism behind the Leonardo effect you
mention - this sounds more like my hunch of the true cause. (I'll
read the archives, but that was another discussion at another time.
There are others in the room now.)
Bruce.
PS - I am a dyed-in-the-wool skeptic. "Died in the wool" is what
happened to Bo Peep in The Great Sheep Stampede.
