It might. In some cases a title or description is necessary or, at the
very least, helpful. They are more often seen in hanging exhibits or in
magazine articles than in competitions. One of the biggest factors in
not having them in competitions, IMHO, is time. Each time you read a
title and the judge stops to ponder the title, especially if it is
subtle, adds to the length of the competition. In our local Council
competitions (2-D), we have some categories that have over 100 entries.
It would add too much time to call out the titles of every image, not to
mention get confusing. In the case of the Mars/Arizona desert example,
in a competition you would have to just accept that it might not be
readily identified, but if were to be displayed or printed, then a title
or description should be used.
