A couple of month ago, I went to the Renaissance fair and shot print
film in my Realist. I decided to take them to Giant for processing so I
could get the smaller prints and I could make pairs. Usually I go to
Costco one hour processing because I can talk to the people doing the
work. They make the larger prints only and need to be trimmed down and
I have to crop too much off. When I send my stereo film anywhere, I
write "Please do not cut film" on the bag and highlight it and also on a
piece of white tape wrapped around the film can itself. When I got the
film back, I found that not only did they cut the film, they cut it
up-within the image area. So, back to Costco. Even though I have to
remind them (occassionally) the camera is not broken, they have *never*
cut my film. Hope I didn't just jinx myself! ;^)
The only way I think you can assure that photo labs follow your
directions is if you get to talk with them personally. Also an
occasional thank you card with some cash (make it a birthday card as
store policy does not allow them to accept "tips" from customers) can go
a long way.
