I think I remember reading on P3D that it depends on the orientation.
I assume you've tried that. There was a web site I came across mentioning
how to make a simple adapter with two mirrors in a upside down V
configuration with a gap where the V intersects. Haven't tried this
myself yet.

This was done with a handheld scanner and portable fluorescent lamp
with both the scanner and lamp held stationary (reel pushed through).
