I tried it. I got interested in trying to post a home page to show
off my Realist
images by scanning them when I read about people using an inverted view box.
I had a Umax 300p at the time and was very disappointed with my attempts to
scan mounted slides. I was getting all sorts of weird color artifacts and
spent many hours trying to correct them with Photoshop.
Then I heard about the HP prism mirrors for $5.50 and ordered two.
The results were better but still not great which I assumed was because they
were focused specifically for the HP scanners. I found that by tilting the
prism thingy I could get pretty poor and unreproducible scans.
Meanwhile, I was keeping my eye on the HP PhotoSmart scanner at
Microcenter (where, btw the sales folks are quite informed and helpful if
you go when they are not too busy). When HP offered a $100 rebate on the
scanner, I couldn't resist. Its output is fantastic but color slide film
(before cutting and mounting) gets color reversed because the scanner
believes it must be negative print film. So you have to "fool" the scanner
by mounting the chips. Then the problem is that the whole slide pair won't
fit in at one time and you have to scan one half of the pair, save that
scan, eject the mounted pair and insert the other end, scan, save and then
manipulate the scanned chips in a Photoshop type of program. The results of
some of my scans can be seen on my web site which was put on line with the
help of Dale Mann--

Btw I am glad to offer for sale one of the HP Adapters to anyone who
can use it or wants to play around with it for $6 +postage.
