This is a problem in amateur astronomy too. At public star gazing
events it is often difficult to get people to refocus the telescope
when they look through it. Everyone's eyes are different. Refocusing
to match your specific vision will always improve the view. (Assuming
the focuser mechanism is any good. A focuser that isn't smooth should
be replaced.)
In part I think this is people's fear of fiddling with someone else's
"expensive" equipment. I get this reaction even when I bring my
cobbled together copyscopes. I bring these specifically to show
people that telescopes do not have to be expensive to provide good
views.
