Although I have not committed the eBay rules to memory, it seems reasonable
that this practice would be entirely acceptable since it doesn't interfere
with the auction transaction. Just a few days ago, I was contacted by the
seller of an item I had "lost" to a higher bidder (I refuse to get up early,
even for eBay). Turns out that she had two of those items and was so
impressed with the price at which the first one sold that she decided to
offer the other to me at my high bid. Made my day.

Similarly, even though I thought I had bid sufficiently high to break the
reserve on a Realist neon sign offered a few months ago, I failed to meet
the seller's minimum. And since I was bidding at the last minute (which I
only do when I really, really want something), there was no time to submit a
follow-up bid. So I contacted him and simply asked how much he wanted for
it. I imagine that cuts eBay out of the loop, as far as assessing a fee on
the sale. I have no perspective as an eBay seller, only as a buyer. Is this
a no-no?
