P3D New Stereo Attitude

OK, I will knuckle down and explain what I believe to be the rules to
follow, not only to maintain, but perhaps to resurrect stereo
photography for my generation, and future generations. I have elected to
follow a set of self-prescribed rules that I believe others can follow
also. I am certainly not an authority, but an advocator for positive
change. Being relatively new to stereo, sometimes fresh eyes see the
finer details.
RULE 1 - Sight is your finest sense. It combines intellect and emotion.
One cannot be present without the other. Never let a "non-emotional"
person, judge etc. influence your work.
RULE 2 - Forget about the pictures you have taken and start thinking
about the hundreds you have yet to take.
RULE 3 - Break all the rules concerning exposure, composition etc. on
20% of your shots. This is truly a way to learn new things and break new
ground.
RULE 4 - Join clubs and organizations much like visiting a buffet. Take
what you want and don't digest anything you don't want. Don't marry your
club......you have things to offer that can be appreciated elsewhere.
RULE 5 - Don't take yourself or others too seriously. Don't become
intimidated. I have met "clowns" that do tremendous work, and scholars
that do lousy work. :-) Knowledge will not make you an artist and some
skills are inherant.
RULE 6 - Share your work without raving or apologizing. Let opinions
fall where they may.
RULE 7 - Realize not everyone thinks 3-D is cool.....these people may be
uncool.
RULE 8 - Become an alien. Forget about orientation, names for things
etc. Pretend you were dropped here with a camera. Try different
perspectives or subjects (I had a slide score very low because the judge
didn't know what it was......everyone else did) This will create some
memorable images.
RULE 9 - (These last two are my new ones) Less time on the
internet.....more time in the real world....shoot more film.
RULE 10 - (I need one more rule to add to this list......10 sounds good,
huh?.......Sorta like the 10 commandments.......only not as
serious.......I believe in only one God......sorry Dr. T will have to
wait :-) ) Mark Dottle
