P3D Re: Cross Eyed Free Viewing

In a message dated Fri, 15 Jan 1999 Larry Berlin gave an excellent explanation
of how to free view, cross-eyed.

I have used this method for many years, and "snap into" cross-eyed free
viewing very fast these days.

When I was over in Boston before going on to the Richmond convention I was
shown a pair of Andy Warhol paintings that were portraits of the same person,
and which seemed to be identical except for the different colour treatments.
The debate was as to whether they could have any stereo element.

The canvases were 3 to 4 feet wide and I guess were separated by about a foot.
Apparently, even that veteran of free viewing, Paul Wing, had not been able to
free view these images and was planning to photograph them so that they could
be viewed in stereo.

Naturally, I just used the "one finger cross-eyed" method and was viewing them
in stereo - if not in 3-d! There was some illusion of depth, but it's my guess
that Warhol used two prints of the same image for the paintings and the
illusion came from retinal rivalry due to the colour differences...

As Larry said, with this method you can even free view billboards (but watch
out for the keystone distortion!)
