Apparently it is relevant to at least some types of ferroelectric
shutters/SLMs/etc., which as John T pointed out can be used for
LCS glasses for stereo viewing. If I can recall the correct terms without
a technical dictionary handy, stereoisomers are optically active, and
can therefore rotate the plane of polarization of incoming light.
(I still don't entirely understand ferroelectric LC shutters - apparently
there are at least three different major types, with radically different
properties and method of operation.)
