I use a flash meter. This baby wasn't cheap, but it completely takes the
mystery and hassle out of flash photos. I love mine.
A flash meter is a special kind of light meter that reads the very brief
flash and then tells you what exposure or aperture is needed. Using one,
you can forget all the rules-of-thumb, guide numbers, math and guesswork.
It is particularly handy with a multiple flash setup, where the math gets
hairy. Sets up lighting ratios easily, even with different power flashes.
B&H has been selling a new digital flash meter for about $200. They can
cost double that. I really like mine.
