George,

No, by no means.  However, the choices aren't "do it perfect or not at
all".  One does the best one can do and goes with that.

I've seen very nice automated "canned" amateur stereo productions 
where the sound was in stereo.

But it doesn't mean that everyone *must* do so. Mono can
certainly be sufficient (even if still "ironic").

Are you saying that those who use stereo sound in their
stereo-photo presentations are doing something bad?  MUST it
be mono to provide contrast to the images?
