Double "gimme a break here"! :-)
The realist uses 35 mm film and takes about 24 mm square images
(1:1 ratio). The full frame 35 mm film takes 24x36 mm images
(1:1.5 ratio). Basically, a difference in aspect ratio. The
35 mm is good for landscapes and other subjects that will
utilize the full width. Notice how our two eyes are in the
horizontal direction? Notice how our field of view is wider
in the horizontal direction? There is a good reason that
stereo favors horizontal (panoramic format). I am hard pressed
to find subjects (other than nude figures, right Boris? :-)
and some architectural subjects) that were made for vertical
stereo.
When you project vertical 35 mm slides, you have a serious
problem. The problem is that you cannot fill the portable
square screen at home. For example, if you screen is 72 inch
wide then you an only use about 40 inches in width. If you
project Realist format slides, you can fill a 72 inch square
screen, hence the impact is greater than full frame 35 mm slides.
Most viewers have round lenses. It is possible to view Realist
format slides at high magnifications. I have a Realist red button
viewer with 40 mm lenses. It is almost impossible to cover the
full width at such high magnification. Hence, again, Realist
format slides can have greater impact than full frame 35 mm
in the viewer.
