Takanori Okoshi has published on optimum design theory and
theoretical limitations of picture performance of raster, grid
and lenticular stereoscopic systems in his book:
"Three-Dimensional Imaging Techniques", Academic Press,
New York 1976.
His equations showed that the theoretical limit to depth
resolution (which is seldom reached but cannot be surpassed)
of lenticular systems is in fact very low.
There is no doubt that depth resolution in classical twin-view
systems, especially in modern color stereo slides, is far better
than ever possible with lenticulars. Even most 19th century views
are better than modern lenticulars, except for the color...
This is not to say all lenticulars are bad, I have a few
interesting ones and I have seen fascinating large ones.
But "Do more lenses always equate with a better 3d effect"
is easily answered: No, TWO lenses are best.
