<big snip, but the paragraph above is perfect>
I have been reading this thread, with some interest, for some weeks. I
have stayed out of it because I have not been able to put my finger on
exactly what my objection to splintering is. But I do object. Bruce sums
it up nicely for me.
I read or skim or skip many items that do not interest me at the moment.
That is not to say that I would not be interested another time. Perhaps
not even interested until after I read an item or thread. I could
subscribe to many groups but I don't have a complete list of 3d related
topics. Aside from that, my interests are broad and fickle.
Now I don't want to read everything in print everyday. That is not
possible. But I would like to whip through some interesting items on 3d.
As to which subtopic I cannot say until after I read them.
I concur with Bruce's idea that many of the areas overlap for many of
the readers. So I would suggest that if several people within this group
continue a discussion then there is a reasonable interest. If there is
not sufficient interest then the thread just dies. Further, that words
should not be wasted telling somebody that they need to move the
discussion out because it is inappropriate. Let that be the domain of
the moderators.
I have seen much more text on the discussion of appropriateness of
subjects than I have on the so-called inappropriate subjects themselves.
I am now starting a new thread by expressing my opinion that all of this
appropriateness discussion is inappropriate and should be moved to a new
group on subject appropriateness. That should make my reading of 3d
related topics much more efficient.
