In principle, it should be possible to take a Realist steal-the-light
viewer, cut
off the eyepiece extensions and replace them with simple tubes. Add close up
lenses to the VM camera and connect the viewer to camera via the tubes.
Some additional series-adaptors might be required to interface the tubes
at the camera end.
Ground glass would be needed intially to get the focus right (by gradually
shortening the tubes) and some of the original image at the edges would
probably have to be sacrificed, but once set up it should be repeatable
without going through the focussing exercise each time ... and indeed could
be used in the middle of a roll shooting normal 3D shots.
Really the same principle as a regular 35mm slide copier.
