I think the problem with this Mike, in the specific case of the VM format,
is the difficulty of cutting out the VM copies to fit the reel.
The VM chips are a special shape - not a straight rectangle - and it isn't
really practical to cut them by hand (to say nothing of the difficulty of
maintaining an equivalent window between left and right exposures).
The VM cutter relies on the exposures being made on 35mm film, in a
specific pattern at that (the film is run through the camera twice with a
set of exposures along each edge of the film), which is why in-camera
duplication from Realist to VM seems to be the logical approach.
