P3D Lents & Phants

My buddy Paul Talbot was correct, I'm too frantic to post lengthily on
much, preparing to move in two days and all. Thanks George for
pinch-hitting on the Peter Sinclair lenticular question. His lents are
remarkable not just for the technical skill involved in their production,
but their wise selection of the best available images and his most
tasteful presentation. We have two in our house now, and I bought next to
nothing else in Green Bay!

My questions about the "window" and lents are of course regarding one of
my pet topics (we all have them don't we?). The window on a lent may be
considered as the picture plane, that is, the plane of the lent itself -
so I'm really just wondering how one would specify to a lent producer
(like Peter) how to register two (or more) images so that objects appear
in the desired relationship to this plane. I'll handle the math, so
lent-gurus needn't panic. Does the phrase "hand-drawn phantogram" ring a
bell? ;-)

What I'm gathering is that the total deviation - that is the total depth -
on any lent is *severely* limited. The amount of distance any object can
be fore or aft of the plane is painfully small, for all practical
purposes. Phanto's (stereoanamorphograms) generally rely on pronounced
through-the window effects for their punch, so the notion of a Phanto-Lent
may be a pipe dream. The sample I got from Jason Shen would seem to
support that.

Of course the fact that lents like to be viewed from very precise angles
is not a problem - they share that quality with the phantogram, so no
conflict of interest there - at least not much.

May be my last offering for a while, so hope this keeps the motor running
'til I get back, whenever that may be.
