Circular polarizers convert unpolarized light to circularly polarized
light.
This is done using a retarder, axis oriented at a 45 degree angle with
respect
to the polarizer axis. Light passes through the composite, is converted to
circularly polarized light. After reflection, it passes through the
retarder again.
This rotates the polarization plane 90 degrees, and is blocked by the
linear polarizer.
