Without knowing the exact details, I have a feeling that fixed lenses
are produced to tighter specifications for focal length. Zoom lenses
have more elements and an extra degree of freedom (zoom) which I
imagine complicates things. The question is, once two zoom lenses are
matched for some FL (say the 35-70mm lenses are matched at 50 mm) and
linked together, does that mean that they will be matched at the ends
too? I think Larry Haines reported that his X3's 28-70mm zooms are off
at the wide angle end, while they are OK at the longer end.
