I agree big time here.  I'm also a professional social event photographer.  
The bulk of my print work is shot on 220 roll film and my local pro lab 
usually gives me great looking prints.  A certain percentage of the time 
though, I shoot 35 mm prints and use various minilabs.  Results are usually 
substandard. I'd say their biggest problem is the introduction of various odd 
color casts. I think the small labs rely on the fact that people tend to 
defer to authority and blame themselves.  It's the odd soul that knows enough 
to ask for a redo.  I don't mean to offend anyone here, but that's been my 
experience.
