I don't think I have ever seen a Kodaslide II viewer with
coating partially (or totally) removed.  I always thought
it would be nearly impossible to remove this coating...
I am afraid that recoating a lens would be quite expensive.  
I would not use "softness" to describe the effect of partially
removed coating.  Maybe lower contrast?  Is it really distracting?
