My apologies for misinterpreting your genuine question as rhetorical.
This is one reason that I would never have vision correction surgery
done; I would lose this close-focus ability! (With glasses on, my
freeviewing distance is something around 16 inches or more away.)
Contact lenses also make close freeviewing impractical, as they'd have
to be removed first. But I suspect the pool of moderately myopic
candidates is still quite large.
Any of the optometrists/opthamologists on the lists have some numbers?
