P3D Digital vs. Film

Robert Thorpe mentioned in a post on 11/5/99 that digital photography could
potentially be used to replace traditional film systems. I don't know
whether he feels this is a good or bad thing. Personally, I am horrified by
the prospect of digital products taking over the market. The worst thing
that could happen, in my eyes, would be if digital photography became cheap
enough to seriously threaten current methods. Compare video and film
productions. Despite the amazing advances in video technology, the image
quality is far inferior to movies shot on real film. Both digital
photography and video technology are have their benefits. They are
certainly more convenient and versatile than film systems in some
situations. I'm grateful for both of these media when they capture a moment
or event that would otherwise have been lost due to film's limitations.
But, for aesthetic reasons,I would hate to see either of them overwhelm
their respective markets.
