I've been a guilty party, but I think I've mended my "misnomeric" ways, for 
the most part.  I have no idea how the misnomer got started, but as for the 
"when," I can contribute this:  When I was a kid (I'm 57 now) a family friend 
had a Holmes-type viewer, which was known to all as a "stereopticon."  Then, 
when my parents bought me a View-Master, in about 1948 or 1949, they also 
called it a "stereopticon."  So, the misnomer goes back at least that far.
