If you want good black and white, USE BLACK AND WHITE FILM. You are having
terrible results processing color film to black and white (C41) negatives using
reversal processing. No wonder. At one time, labs did not want to process slides
as negatives because of the potential contamination problems. I am sure this is
part of your problem.

I would suggest that if you want to do first quality work in black and white,
use a slow speed film, a tripod, proper filtration and a cable release. If you
do it right, you will be rewarded with excellent results.
