Here's a couple of data points. I bought one of the "refurbed" units
for sale a couple of years ago but it functioned only intermittantly.
Eventually it quit and I determined that the IR led transmitters on the
computer box had burned out (there are 3 - actually I think two of them
might have been very weak anyway since the angle of viewing successfully
was VERY narrow). I replaced the led with one from Radio Shack and got
it going again. In order to do this I had to dis-assemble the glasses,
and ended up leaving the plastic face plate off. The only problem with
that is that you tend to get marginally more ghosting and it exposes the
shutter panels to physical damage.
