With all this talk of using LED's I thought I would direct you to a 
really great site:

Cavers are starting to use LED light systems for their main source 
as well as back up flashlights. This site has a lot of really good 
information and links for those interested. It also talks about using a 
special D cell sized lithium sulfur dioxide 3.0 volt battery that can 
give 11 hours on high, 50 hours on medium, and 300 hours on low 
and this is in a 24 LED array.

A lot of technical information and links also.
