I saw Fantasia 2000 last night. Very nice indeed. They kept the Sorcerer's
Apprentice segment from the original Fantasia and made up a bunch of new
segments, using new music.
I saw it at the Tech museum [www.thetech.org] in San Jose which has an Imax
theater, and sat front-row center. The Tech's screen is a dome, rather than a
flat one and was put in just a year ago. Fantasia 2k is in limited release
[Imax only!] until 5/1/2k.
I thought I could see jaggies [that's a technical term in computer graphics]
on the bubbles in one of the segments, but it could have been an interaction
with the perforated aluminum screen they were using, or even my imagination.
The rendering was top-notch throughout the film.
The segment with the whales is just completely gorgeous and in my opinion is
the star of the show.
It seemed as if they transfered The Sorcerer's Apprentice from the Laserdisc
printing. I say this because I noticed a random color graininess to that
segment, most obviously on Mickey's face. On further reflection, I guess it
could be the *grain* from the original Technicolor print. I wish they had
cleaned up this segment more, but it was still nice to see it on a Big Huge
Screen.
It seemed as if they had filmed the new orchestra and cameo clips on video and
then transfered them to imax format -- or maybe it's just the grain of regular
film showing when magnified onto imax..
All in all, a good $24 spent on two movie tickets. An Event!
