It may be that the flash recommends one aperture, and two maximum
distances depending on power setting.

Have you tried contacting Vivitar to get an instruction book?  I
believe that you can get manuals from Vivitar's web page.

Also, if you have a focal plane shutter (as most 35mm SLRs do) there
is a maximum shutter speed that will work with flash.  This is the
sync speed and is often marked in red or with an X (for X sync) on the
shutter dial.  At this speed (or slower) the entire film frame is
exposed when the flash goes off.  At speeds faster than the sync speed
only part of the film frame will be exposed when the flash goes off.

If you have a leaf shutter (aka a "between the lens shutter") you can
sync at any speed.  I believe George mentioned that the Realist has a
leaf shutter.
