As best as I can tell, there is no universal agreement as to why
the curved mount was adopted. Some think the reasons you mention,
while it may be that the thought was that a curved mount made the
image look more "3D". One nice thing is that if you are looking
for OLD cards, having a flat, pastel colored mount indicates an
early view. I think the earliest one I have is a pink pastel
flat with a serial of something like 120 by Kilburn, just labelled
"Dogs" showing some Dalmations, otherwise unremarkable which I got
for 50 cents some years ago...
