As a caver with "contacts" in Hawaii and having been there 
myself I can tell you that it is now near impossible to get 
close to the lava flows. Too many idiots have not returned 
from such trips, and with the sue-happy society we now have  
no one wants to take that chance.

Of course, the right people with the right connections should 
be able to get you there, but I am not sure who those now are 
or what that might be. Perhaps a professional taking 
commercial shots?
