There's an active volcano on the "big" island (the island of Hawaii itself)
that's been spouting for quite a few years. I was there in 1991 ... after
walking across 2 miles of hardened lava (some of which was quite hot from
the active flow underneath) and breathing sulfurous fumes, we got to a spot
where you could watch a spout of lava come out of the side of the ledge and
pour into the ocean, about 5 feet below, causing a huge plume of steam and
sulfurous smoke. It was NOT slow moving, but it was exciting.
I believe it's still flowing, though the exact landscape, and what you can
see, changes all the time.
