It was a separate entity, somewhere back in the late 80's.  They were 
marketing a Pixar Image Processing Computer.  I believe the animation unit 
basically was creating demos to show off the hardware.  Ed Catmull, Alvy 
Ray Smith, and a lot of the other Lucasfilm gurus were on hand.  I'm not 
sure if John Lassiter joined then or later, but he certainly steered them 
towards doing commercial animation.
