I don't know how it was done for mass produced stereo cards, but
generally B&W images are hand tinted by applying translucent oil
colors to a fiber based print.  You apply the oil paint and blend it
with a Q-Tip.

Marshall's is the dominant brand with several color sets, books and
videos.  Larger camera stores should carry their line.

Do you have any idea what the cost of hand tinted cards was at the
time they were new?  If the price was high enough it's possible that
they might have each been hand colored.
