I tried this solution and it worked like a charm.  I wonder why HP had me
trying arcane upside-down incantations instead such a simple fix??

I found a PhotoSmart FAQ while looking for alternate software to run the
scanner.  I've tried the PScan32 program which is freeware, and it does
seem to produce better scans for me, although it doesn't allow me to
adjust the scan area so I always get 2x2 shaped scans, which seems to crop
some off the bottom of my Realist format slides.  The FAQ lists a couple
other programs to run the scanner which are supposed to be better than the
supplied HP software.  It's worth taking a look:
