[photo-3d] Re: passport cameras

The topic of using passport & ID cameras for stereo has come up again. Gary
Nored kindly points out the need to transpose the views.
I would like to add that most of these cameras are built to obtain a very
specific reproduction ratio. US passports require the image of the head be
from 1" to 1 3/8" (25mm to 34mm) on a two inch (51mm) square print. Most
"cut & paste" ID cameras are built with a final image size of only 1"x1.25"
(25mm x 31mm), so the head is correspondingly smaller. Most of these cameras
are built to reduce an average adult face to this size from a working
distance of four to six feet (1.2 to 1.9 meters). They use relatively long
focal length lenses and have preset focus with a fairly small depth of field.
Most passport cameras are built to render two images on one sheet of
Polaroid film, 83mm x 108mm. Most "cut & paste" ID cameras provide six
images on the same size & type of film.
My point to this technical essay is that their uses as stereo cameras may be
somewhat limited. Instant 3D portraits leap to mind, as do some
tabletop/still life subjects, but what main stream uses would they have?
