Something around 30mm sounds OK. Remember, the other
dimension is 22mm?, so the vertical needs to be quite a bit
more than that to give the "portrait" impression.

There are only two TDC carriers. One is 25x25mm (one
inch square). This is the newer carrier. It is found in all
716 models and a few "late" 116 models. The other is
40x40mm. It is found in most all 116 models (except for
a few "late" ones). This appears to be fine for the portrait
orientation. I would say that this carrier comes in about
50% of all TDC projectors.

There is also the Selectron carrier (the other two are the
single-slide carriers) which is 25x25mm. This is also
the size of the openings in most other stereo projectors
of the 50s.

It appears that the TDC 116 is the way to go for vertical
mounts.

You can find a short tutorial on "Wide Stereo Viewing".
Towards the end there is a picture of 3 projector carriers,
a Compco Triad, a modified (for 7p) TDC 716 and an
original TDC 116.
