In regard to the 3D film festival in Palo Alto, I also noticed the 
difference in value scale between left and right images, and had noticed it 
before in a different theater while watching an anaglyph print of "It Came 
>From Outer Space".  I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but 
I think this could be attributed to the tendency of movie (or any color 
positive) film to redden with age; an effect we've all probably noticed from 
watching educational films at our underfunded public schools.  This, of 
course, would be dependent on whether or not these new-looking black and 
white prints were made from old anaglyph stock.  Otherwise I guess the 
reason could be that the original cameras weren't exactly at the same f-stop 
(and that would be contingent on the use of the same rig for every shot 
throughout the film).  Just some guesses...
