About a year ago our local Columbus, GA, newspaper, The Ledger-Enquirer,
began a project titled "100 people to Remember" It was created to
recognize 100 people who have contributed to the culture, education,
business, etc of Columbus over the past 100 years. The first three
hundred nominations appeared in April 1999 and when I checked the list I
found that I was included in the nominations. My contribution is/was the
"Personalities & Places " community service project that I am working on
with Columbus State University. This project is to document the people
and places of Columbus, in archival black & white stereographs, so future
historians will be able to see how they looked in the 1990s and early
2000s.
I was pleased but didn't think my name would make the final cut of 100.
Then two months later another 400 names were added to this list. In
August the selection Board met and picked the 100 people that would go on
the list. These folks were featured over the last 100 days of 1999, a
name and picture daily. Of course I was not on the list, but there were
many on it that had already been included in "Personalities & Places" and
those who had not previously been included were invited to have their
stereograph made by me so it could be placed in the Archives at CSU.
The Ledger-Enquirer recently published the whole list of 100 people to be
remembered as a supplement to the Sunday newspaper. It included the
other 600 names who had been nominated. We refer to ourselves as "The
Honorable Mentions" I am the only photographer/stereographer on this
list of 700 names.
Will this increase my Social Security and my rating among my peers?
Probably not
Am I proud that I am the only photographer on this list of people who
deserve to be remembered in the 20 th century, in Columbus Georgia. Yes
I am. .
