Sure, why not?
"If so, maximum transfer of information during
scanning might be the appropriate criterion for setting exposure. Would
a slide
verging on being washed out be a good candidate for scanning?"
If the data is not there in the first place digital processing will not
make it appear. I suppose that one could "paint it in", but a great
slide is required for a great scan.
"Furthermore, would Velvia be good film for this purpose, considering
colors could be juiced up as desired by manipulating a digital file?"
Velvia is a great film, and shooting half a stop under really pumps the
colors.
"All this might be so far in the future that it is not worth
considering."
Quality digital display is available today and it is wonderful. It is
not Kodachome or Velvia in its effect and never will be. However, 1024
x 768 32 bit deep low compression pairs work great, especially if your
glasses are running above 100Htz. Digital is the only way that you are
ever likely to see my slides of Yosemite, air shows, and car shows.
Once images are saved as JPS pairs they may be replayed using what ever
technology comes along. I have built a few different display systems
that use JPS images and require no glasses. With a computer that
supports two monitors I could display a digital pair of 1200 x 860 or
larger and view with no glasses.
The future is now. Don't wait for it to come to you, make it yourself!
