I'm finding these digital scanning threads extremely useful, here's why.
I'm doing cave photos, and the costs involved in getting copies of all
our shots to all the members in the photo team is really adding up.
Here's what I plan to do as soon as I know what equipment to purchase.
I'll be shooting slide film at 5 perf in a Stereo Realist. When I
get the uncut roll back, I want to be able to scan the entire roll
before mounting it. From these pairs, I'll select the "keepers" -
making prints for stereo pairs to use in Holmes-style viewers. This
shouldn't be too much to ask from one of the Epson or HP state-of-art
$300 printers. Needless to say, I'm purchasing a fast Pentium III
to run a Photoshop program as a part of all this. Where my knowledge
is lacking is in what film scanner to buy. I know that Kodak is using
a scanner way out of my budget, but they'll give me the best scans.
It's my understanding that Kodak will send me back a CD with my scanned
images or I can download them from Kodak's web site. My other choice
is to buy my own film scanner, which is what I may have to do anyway
if Kodak or any other film lab won't take the extra trouble to work
with stereos. Who out there is already doing this? Are there film
scanners available for under $500 that will give me decent prints
and can scan 5 perf images?

I was afraid of this. Can a Realist format slide be easily scanned
at home without unmounting it? Which film scanner is the one to
purchase?
thanks to any who reply
