Actually there's another explaination for that.  The color of dirt is
different in different regions of the USA (sun bleaching I guess).
The domestic car manufacturers deliberately bias what colors they sell
in what regions of the country.  The northeast gets darker colors and
the southwest gets lighter colors.  The idea is that the local dirt
won't show up against the basic car color.  Of course you can order
whatever color car you want, but many people just buy what's on the
lot.
