I thought of doing this a while ago. In fact I purchased a
minidisc recorder and a set of miniature microphones so I could
do binaural recordings. This technique can give you much of the
realism that surround sound aspires to while requiring only
modest recording and presentation gear. See:
http://www.kevlar.karoo.net/binaural.html
for more information about this technique. The downside is that
a binaural recording has little stereo effect when played
through speakers. So if you only have one shot at recording the
sound, you have to decide up front if you are going to use
binaural miking or conventional stereo miking.

I had pretty much given up on this idea because of what I assumed
the cost of the equipment would be. I'd love to be proven wrong
and would like to hear more! The sooner the better since I have
to decide what I'll before leaving in 3 weeks for my China trip!
Later....BC
