Having never used heat sealed mounts, is the problem the size of the iron
vs the mount?

They make a tacking iron for using on dry mount paper or installing monokote
on airplane models. This is a small heating plate (maybe 1" by 2") with a
long handle. This is small enough and square enough that I would think it
would be easy to run around the side and into the middle (the front comes to a 
point) that you wouldn't have any problems with touching the actual slide.
