[photo-3d] 3D photo beginner

I just recently discovered (and purchased) an antique stereo viewer
and a handful of stereo pair slides (early 1900's). I love this
stuff and would like to try 3D photography for myself. I have looked
at ebay and seen alot of 3D equipment for sale.

Any suggestions on the best way to get started? Any "Do's and
Don't's" type of advice would be greatly appreciated.
What's the best
type of camera to start out with? I like the idea of creating stereo
prints that I could view through my new "old" viewer, so
I'd like to
start out in that direction. Maybe slides later.

Do cameras like the Realist use standard 35mm film, and can the film
be developed at the corner store, just like anything else?

P.S. I don't have any real photography experience beyond
"point and
click" cameras and dropping film at Walmart for development, and
am
fairly ignorant of photo jargon, so go easy on the novice.
